American Cultures I is a survey course that begins with the study of Native Americans and their influences on the Americas as well as their contact with and conquest by European societies. Particular attention is paid to the emergence of and development of England’s Thirteen Colonies, The Revolutionary War period, the growth of the new nation (from the Federal Period to Jacksonian Democracy), Westward migration, and the growing controversy over sectionalism and states’ rights. The course concludes with a study of the Civil War and takes a look at Reconstruction. Throughout the class, emphasis is placed on important individuals and groups. Conflict and cooperation are analyzed for the tremendous impact that they have had on history, and continuity and change are focused on as major determinants in shaping people’s lives as well as the life of this nation. This is a one-semester course that meets five times per week. Assessment will be based on tests and quizzes, as well as preparation and completion of assignments, presentations, and projects. Because this course is offered on three different levels (Honors, College Prep, and On-Level), the depth of study and the work required would be calibrated according to the level selected.
